Newspapers on Microfilm

Microfilm is viewable on the library's new microfilm reader, which allows you to capture copies and email or print them. The library may also InterLibrary Loan microfilm from other libraries for you to view at our library. This service is available to Fremont Cardholders only. If requesting film from outside the U.S. fees may apply for shipping costs. Call or stop by the Adult Help Desk for more information.

The Fremont Public Library is located in Mundelein, Illinois and part of Fremont Township. Records going back to the beginning of settlement in the area can be found in numerous places.

Fremont Township

The Fremont Township Clerk's office has the Township board meeting minutes back to 1850. They have listings of people registered to vote in 1868, 1870, 1871 and 1873. They also have a list of people who voted in the election of 1897.

U.S. Census microfilm: The Library owns the reels that include Fremont Township covering every decade census from 1820 to 1930 (except for 1890).

We also have the Lake County, IL Census data in book form for the following dates:

We also have an Index in book form of the Lake County, IL Military Census of 1862

Mundelein Heritage Museum

Former Mundelein Soo Line depot converted into a museum. Exhibits feature railroad memorabilia, pioneer tools, business machines, quilts, 1774 flint-lock gun, war uniforms and weapons and Diamond Lake artifacts. 1890 caboose on site.


Lake County Court House

The Lake County Clerk's Office has the following vital records:

Marriage Licenses - back to 1839

Birth Records - back to 1871

Death Records - back to 1877

Before March 1, 1839, the area now comprising Lake County belonged to a bewildering number of government bodies. To see the changes in Illinois county borders, go to Illinois County Boundaries - 1790 - Present.

Records of wills and probates are kept by Clerk of the Circuit Court. These records go back to the 1830s. Indexes of the wills are kept at the probate desk at the Circuit Court office.

The Library can assist with searches for obituaries we may have in our microfilm and/or online collections of local newspapers for patrons who do not live in district. To submit a name to be searched, please include as much information as you can about the individual in an email to the Adult Help Desk. A librarian will assist you within 5 days.
