Professor Arthur Cyr of Carthage College will place current developments in the relationship between the US and France in wider contest, historically and geographically.
While our alliance with Britain is durable, relations with France have been complex. Today, many believe the United States is withdrawing from Europe, while France and other countries experience domestic unrest. During the Cold War, President Charles de Gaulle of France pursued independent national policies, often clashing with the U.S.
Yet today France also is a strong supporter of NATO, French troops perform vital missions in Africa and elsewhere, and French military aircraft helped secure North America skies after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. France also was a vital ally during and after the American Revolution.
Professor Arthur Cyr of Carthage College will place current developments in wider contest, historically and geographically.
