School Age Children

Beginning Readers

Our Early Reader collection is divided into five levels that are color coded to make it easy for you and your child to find books that she can read and enjoy.

  • Pre-1 = Reading Readiness (reading to be shared)
  • 1 = Begin to Read (reading with help)
  • 2 = I Can Read (reading with less help)
  • 3 = I Can Read (reading alone with a little help)
  • 4 = I Am Reading (reading alone, early chapter books)
Five Finger Rule
  • Have your child read a page
  • Put up one finger for every word that she does not know
  • 0 fingers - the book is too easy
  • 2-3 fingers - the book is "just right"
  • 5 fingers - book is too hard

Transitional Readers

When Early Readers are too easy, but full-sized Juvenile novels are too hard, transitional books are the answer. Transitional fiction typically has:

  • A main character between the age of 8-10 and a length of 60-110 pages
  • One main plotline with subjects suitable for 7 to 10-year-old readers
  • Language and vocabulary accessible to children reading at a 2nd-3rd grade level
  • Lexile levels in the range of 350-750
  • Larger text, more white space and illustrations to support the text
